Daydream believer...

So what will I be talking about today? Well, perhaps surprisingly-considering my ongoing problem with sleeplessness- its dreams, I say surprisingly, as you might well assume I don’t have any, but, it’s not those kind of dreams I want to talk about today. Now, before I go much further, I should stress, this is not a post about dream analysis, where, if you visualise yourself flying (depending on which book you read), you’re either desperate to escape your current surroundings or you yearn for a wild, sexual encounter. I have also heard, if you dream about spiders, this means you’re either going to be blessed by unexpected good fortune or your deepest fears are about to be unleashed. So as the dream analysis field is clearly somewhat unpredictable, I thought I might focus more on those daydreams we have probably all had at one time or another.

Now, you might not be keen to admit it, but I have few doubts we have all stood in front of a mirror, used a hairbrush as a microphone and sung at the very tops of our voices, pretending we are performing in front of seething mass of adoring fans.

Perhaps you have even picked up a can of polish, imagined it to be an Oscar and launched into a moving, possibly lengthy acceptance speech where you thank everyone from the esteemed director, your co-stars, through your whole circle of family and friends, ending on a touching tribute to your ever-faithful cat, Twinkle-Toes and trusty goldfish, Splashy. There are many other examples, like sitting in your car when it’s not even moving and pretending to be winning a Grand Prix or even simply waltzing around the room alone, picturing yourself in the arms of some gorgeous hunk and winning a glittery trophy on a TV show. So we all have these moments, but what separates those who will only ever dream and those who make them a reality?

Marilyn Monroe was once asked, why she thought she had become such a success, whereas so many others pursuing that same career, had not, she answered with the simple statement, she believed she had wanted it more. I think she was right, perhaps to achieve those dreams, you need to find the confidence somehow, to just go out there and make them happen.

Of course, a degree of luck is involved, but I suppose, you have to be actually in the game, for that luck to find you. When you read interviews with those who have attained their goals, they very often mention the number of sacrifices they had to make, often they had to move home, or put off having a family, but they must have thought it was worth it, to keep going. Perhaps that could be seen to be quite selfish, but if we do have only one life, perhaps we should make the most of every moment and achieve everything we can within that time. Also there are very few things in life which don’t come with any strings attached, perhaps those who achieve their dreams accept that more readily than the others - the ones for whom those sacrifices are just too big a price to pay for the dream.

I do understand not everyone dreams of the same kind of success, I am sure many people have imagined themselves walking up the aisle, seeing a beaming George Clooney, Channing Tatum or David Gandy gazing lovingly back at them as the bridal music is playing. Now, obviously that luck I mentioned, does play an infinitely larger role in this dream, as for it to become reality, you do have to actually meet your chosen future husband. Sadly, the chances of accidentally bumping into one of them in the grocery aisle of the supermarket, are pretty slim – but you never know, they need food too and they may well fall into your arms when you casually mention over the carrots just how talented you are in the kitchen. (I would stress you mean talented at cooking, you wouldn’t want them to get the wrong idea about you and start imagining you naked, brandishing a ladle – although, in thinking about it, that might get you further with them).

So what about me? Well, my dream has kind of come true, I wanted to write a book, which obviously was in my own hands to do, all it took was the resolve and the discipline to sit down and type. But now that’s done, I can see that wasn’t really the whole dream, what I really wanted, was to write a successful book, to be a respected writer and that, my friends, takes a lot longer and may never come true, but I am not ready to give up on it just yet.

In finishing, John Lennon famously said, life is what happens while you’re making other plans, maybe we let the everyday aspects of life take over and chasing our dreams becomes a luxury of time we just don’t feel we can justify, when it’s compared to more ‘sensible’ or ‘responsible’ activities. But the next time you’re yelling ‘Hello New York’ into that hairbrush before launching into a blistering rendition of ‘Bat out of Hell’, maybe pause for a moment and think how much more fun it would be, to be doing that in front of a real crowd. Dreams are not just the preserve of the rich or the famous, we ALL have them...we just need to want them more..until the next time, keep dreaming…

Take care out there xxx
